Canada does not want the UK to join the Trans-Pacific Trade Group

A new member wants to join the Trans-Pacific Trade Group and the Canadian beef industry is not on board.

Canada’s red meat sector is urging the Parliament not to let the United Kingdom into the agreement. Canada’s Cattlemen’s Association worries the same disappointment from the Canada-Europe Trade Agreement prior to Brexit will take place again.

According to Ryder Lee, “What we have with the Trans-Pacific Partnership is really good market access. It’s science-based. It trusts the system. If it’s good for Canadians then we’re importing it, and we’ve seen excellent growth. If we let the UK in, making political decisions about production, that precedent is terrible not only for our current partners in TPP but any other country that wants in.”

Canadian cattlemen are worried about the UK’s ongoing boycott of hormone therapy in cattle, along with their commonly used carcass wash.
