Playing French Seattle 2009 steering committee meetings
Thursday, March 19 and Monday, March 23 at 7 - 9 pm.
University Heights Center (room 211)
5031 University Way North East
Seattle, 98105
At these meetings scripts will be available for the plays we hope to produce at the October festival. We also intend to read selected scenes and the whole play of the bilingual adaptation of Balzac's "Le Faiseur." This play alone has 15 characters (eleven male, four female). (Beckett's "En Attendant Godot" (Waiting for Godot) is also on our list, so we are especially interested in middle aged men with good french.)
I hope to see you at one of these sessions. If you cannot make a meeting but would like to receive updates and meeting notices, please respond to Tom ansart: libchase@aol.com
Update on progress toward Playing French Seattle 2009
We have had several planning meetings of the core committee and have reduced the list of possible plays to eight:
1. Attending Godeau (bilingual adaptation of "Le Faiseur" (Balzac))
2. Folie (Pliya)
3. En Attendant Godot (Beckett)
4. Combat de nègre et de chiens (Koltes)
5. Le Dernier Godot ou Petit boulot pour vieux clown (Matèi Visniec)
6. Nous Etions Assis sur le Rivage du Monde or L'Art (Reza)
7. Les Bonnes (Genet)
8. Happy Days (Beckett)
Grant funding has been requested from étant donné and 4culture. A $1,200 grant award has been received from Seattle Arts and Cultural Affairs. A letter of intent has been submitted to Humanities Washington. The current projected festival budget is $32,855.
As in previous years performances will be at the Ethnic Cultural Theatre near UW. The tentative festival dates are October 19- November 1, 2009. Rehearsals will begin right after labor day, with some readings in advance. Auditions for any unfilled parts are likely to be held in August. No parts are currently cast.
As the producing entity, Steeplechase Productions is dedicated to paying artists for their work. In recent years only a stipend payment has been possible ($75). Directors last year were paid $500. The producers, designers and crew were volunteers in 2008 (with the exception of a stage and house manager).
In 2008 the event was co-sponsored by the Alliance Française de Seattle and the University of Washington (Playing French Seattle is a registered student organization of UW).
